How it is done

  1. 10:28Divide the hair into four sections to keep the process manageable. Color is lightest wherever you start, so begin where you want it lightest.
  2. 20:57For the roots, mix a richer permanent color (she used 8N) with 20 volume developer in equal parts, 2 oz of each, for a soft, natural-looking lift.
  3. 31:54Use the mix right after you make it; don't set it down and walk away. Brush it about an inch to an inch and a half up from the roots, section by section, covering every piece.
  4. 42:23Leave the root color on for 45 minutes.
  5. 53:18While the roots process, mix the highlight lightener with 20 volume developer for caramel, sun-kissed tones.

  8. 85:13When applying at home, paint the lightener vertically with the brush. It's fine if sections overlap, because that looks more natural.
  9. 95:41Finish with a lighter base color all over. She mixed high-lift 12N and 12A in even parts so everything comes out in one shampoo and one drying.
  10. 106:45Style the blonde curls: diffuse-dry with your styling products, then pick them out for volume.
