How it is done

  1. 10:00Gather a wide-tooth comb, a moisturizer or leave-in conditioner, and a spray bottle of water.
  2. 20:27Starting from an old twist-out, section off the top front of the hair.
  3. 30:57Mist the section with water without soaking it, seal with the leave-in, and comb it forward so the top will stand up.
  4. 41:25Twist the top out of the way, then repeat on one side: water, finger detangle, leave-in, and twist or band it.
  5. 52:22Repeat on the other side, then do the whole back together so it does not stretch too straight.
  6. 63:19Finger detangle the back, comb it out to fluff it, then undo all the sections, leaving the back loose until last.
  7. 73:51Pick the hair out to fluff it, then pat it back down. Release the back once everything faces forward.
  8. 84:19If the top lies flat or looks too straight, add a little water to help it curl up.
  9. 95:15Keep picking and patting all around the head until the afro forms an even round shape.
