How it is done

  1. 10:39Start with hair a week or so after wash day. Note where it grows longer or shorter so you know which parts need stretching.
  2. 20:39Moisturize the hair with water and a moisturizer of your choice, then detangle lightly.
  3. 31:14Band the top and side sections with hair ties to stretch them. Blow-drying the roots is an alternative to banding.
  4. 41:42Tie the middle back in a loose pigtail and leave the longest back section free so it shrinks up for a round shape.
  5. 51:42After a few hours, when the hair is dry, remove the ties and fluff the hair out with an afro pick.
  6. 62:15If the coils look too defined, gently comb through them for a fluffier, cottony texture.
  7. 72:15Put on a snug silk bonnet for about an hour to press the hair into a round shape, then pick it out with your fingers.
  8. 82:45Blow-dry the roots at the top and sides to stretch them a little more and lift the shape.
  9. 93:14Fluff the hair with your fingers and fix any pieces that stick out of the round shape.
