How it is done

  1. 10:00Study the hairline and nape for changes in texture, density and curl pattern before you color, because they decide where the color goes.
  2. 20:53Note your natural level and any previously colored ends, then open the curls up to see how the texture changes through the rest of the head.
  3. 31:20Mist the hair with a leave-in spray and a little oil, then detangle it into about 10 small panels and clip each one. Comb from the ends while holding the base.
  4. 42:18Start at the nape with diagonal sections and apply the high-lift color with 5-volume developer. Step the developer up to 20 volume as you move toward the front.
  5. 52:46Keep tension at the base and clip each section so the curl can't spring back. Saturate the ends, feather the color toward the base and fold the foil into a packet.
  6. 63:13Let it process for about 20 minutes, then apply a demi-permanent toner all over for coverage and shine.
  7. 74:09Blow-dry or stretch the hair straight, then set it on perm rods using a foaming pomade, a curl foam and a light serum.
  8. 84:38Unwind each rod the same way you placed it. Rub a little serum on your palms and peel the curls apart to expand them.
  9. 95:25Shake the hair out, then pick it to support the volume so the silhouette is balanced and even.
