How it is done

  1. 10:00Get out a wide-tooth comb, your favorite moisturizer or leave-in conditioner, and a spray bottle of water. Start from an old twist-out.
  2. 20:27Section off the top front and mist it with water so it's damp but not soaked, which keeps it from shrinking too much. Seal the water in with a little leave-in conditioner.
  3. 30:57Comb the top section forward with the wide-tooth comb. Fluffing it forward is what makes the top of a fro stand up. Then twist it loosely out of the way.
  4. 41:25Do each side the same way: spray it, finger-detangle without forcing the comb, seal with leave-in, comb through and twist or band it loosely.
  5. 52:51Do the whole back as one section so it doesn't come out straighter than the rest. Moisturize it, finger-detangle and comb it out.
  6. 63:19Undo the front sections but leave the back banded until everything else is going forward.
  7. 73:51Pick the hair out, then pat it back down, and keep alternating between picking and patting.
  8. 84:19If any part is too flat or straight, add a little water to help it curl up and stand.
  9. 95:15Keep picking and patting all the way around until the fro forms a round sphere.
